My name is Danielle Rebel Oluokun, with that said I recently changed my name from Elizabeth Danielle Barber. The reason, my entire life I have been called Danielle so I made it my first name. My last name changed because I finally married my high school sweetheart of 25 years. Lastly, the middle name, well that is maybe my alter ego. It’s my future. My future of joining my art with the experiences of my career that I am transitioning out of. That career has been being a psychiatric registered nurse, I have worked in many mental health settings and with the most vulnerable humans. I began to get burned out for many reasons, under staffing, administration, poor quality of care and life for patients, the dangers of this profession, and the fact that no one in administration, regulatory or the political arena seem to care. So I am taking these experiences and going back home. I am going back to my passion and roots, which is art. In my past life I was a painter, I painted large realistic paintings, murals and went to a fancy art school for one semester. Then I had to drop out because I could not afford it. Then I had my first child and that is when I ended up going back to school, for nursing, so I could pay the bills. Through the years I have painted, done arts & crafts with my kids, which now I have three beautiful daughters. While I home schooled my daughters, I even ran an educational farm that worked with schools and the community to learn about and experience nature, gardening, farming and art called Edie’s Place. Which was really cool but a lot of work. But I have not done art that has sparked the fire inside of me. This is where the name Rebel comes in. I have whistleblowed on organizations I have worked for that are putting humans, whether patients or staff in harms way. I am rebellious, I am a truth teller and I care. So I am starting my second career or better yet my next journey in life. I want to be a social impact artist. I have always made art that provokes thought. Even as a Nurse Educator, I wrote curriculum and would often create an image to breakdown complex ideas. So I realized that is my thing. Create images maybe use a few words to provoke thought and hopefully some positive change in people and to spread awareness about concerning topics in our society.
